How are Helsinki's plant stocks being preserved?

The vegetation in Helsinki's parks has been surveyed in several inventories and studies. The Public Works Department has also worked with the University of Helsinki and other research bodies to preserve old ornamental cultivars. Efforts have been made to bring difficult-to-propagate crab apples trees and common lilac cultivars into production using micropropagation at the Laukaa unit of MTT Agrifood Research Finland. Cuttings from easier species, such as shrub roses, are grown in Finnish nurseries.
